My name is Steve Brewis and I am the Director of The Infinite Game.  I started my professional career as a Marine Engineer in the Merchant Navy where I was fascinated in experiential learning (having conversations with your environment) and was fortunate enough to have the 'ship' to experiment upon.

My Story

I left the Merchant Navy to join the National Health Service where I was responsible for the commissioning and ongoing management of a large district general hospital.  It was in this role that I became involved in the design of self adaptive control systems for the control of 'comfort' in operating theatres.  Again I used my 'conversational approach' by having the operating theatre to experiment upon.  It was while I was having these conversations through the models of comfort that I discovered Ashby's Law Of Variety.  It was in this role that I won a national award for my work in the field of energy management.

I left the National Health Service to join British Telecom where I had a number of senior management positions ranging from District Payphone Manager to Business Consultant and ending my career there as Chief Research Scientist.  It was in my role as Chief Research Scientist where I gained a greater awareness of organisational complexity and the challenge this gave management.  It was in this area that I met the late Stafford Beer and was fortunate to work with him in his later years.  As a lasting legacy I became one of the co-founders of SCiO, setup to take his work forward.

Following my retirement from British Telecom, I created The Infinite Game, my current challenge is to improve organisational effectiveness through the trans-formative fusion of cybernetics, social capital and biological stigmergy facilitating the creation of CONVERSATIONAL white spaces, the mating ground, the space of shared understanding where novelty and creativity arise.
